First Impression: Well when Dad told me that I was going to start “carting” to give me yet another outlet for my boundless energy I didn’t quite know what to expect. He ordered me a fancy harness online from Harnesses by Carol, after doing much research and comparing. Unfortunately, it took over 6 weeks to arrive - by then I had forgotten all about it! Even though it took forever to arrive, it was made very well. I got a size 34, with the extra foam padding around the neck. I go every week to practice with my trainer. I’m still learning the proper pulling technique so I’m not hauling that much yet. I am trying to learn to keep my head down and muscle through the pull v.s. a lunge or jump at the start. Dad found a book online called “Weight Pull Training” by Mark Landers, it’s full of great information that I recommend every interested puppy start with.

Conclusion: Quality harness! Took forever… Expensive, $110 for mine, but it’s better to have quality gear. If you’re interested in carting/pulling, give this harness a shot! 3.5 out of 4 paws because of slow service.

First Impression: When Dad first adopted me I was a hellion on a leash. I was sure that I had to pull him along. We went through many different harnesses before we found something that would work. This is one of the things that didn’t work worth a darn. The design is simple. If I pull straight forward the front cinches down, pulling my shoulders together, making it impossible for me to keep pulling. Great in a theoretical world where dogs always pull straight forward… I personally would like to pull off to the left or right, which made the harness useless, it couldn’t cinch down then. One night I decided to chew the harness apart while Mom and Dad were sleeping. Dad contacted Premier and they offered to replace the harness for $7. Dad said it wasn’t worth it and threw the remains in the trash.

Conclusion: Don’t waste your money on this product. Premier Pet makes another product that works great, the Gentle Leader! Or you can always try out the prong collar. 1.5 out of 4 paws because its construction is good, but ineffective on a true large breed dog.

First Impression: When Dad returned the Halti Collar he got me the Gentle Leader. It works much better than the Halti. The strap that gets tightened under my jaw prevents the harness from riding up and pressing on my eyelid. I still do not really like the Gentle Leader because it prevents me from looking at other dogs, but I wear it in exchange for being taken on walks. The Gentle Leader comes in a large enough size to fit my giant Rottweiler head.

Conclusion: If your parents complain that you pull too much on your walks, you may want to tell them about the Gentle Leader. I like a prong collar more, but Dad says I behave more with the Gentle Leader.

First Impression: My Halti Collar pulled up on my right eye when I pulled. This caused my eye to water, and I really didn’t like it. Dad says some side stabilization on the fabric that runs from collar portion up to the nose area would help the problem. I was very glad when Dad returned the collar to the store.

Conclusion: My trainer says that some dogs like the Halti Collar, and some prefer the Gentle Leader. I’m 100% sure that I prefer the Gentle Leader. Every dogs head size is different, so make sure your parents let you try both. 2 out of 4 Paws because even though I hated the Halti, it was made well and someone else could like it.

First Impression: My Prong Collar works really well. Even Mom can control me when we walk with my prong collar. The prongs look like they might hurt, but I’ve never had any pain. Mom and Dad love my prong collar and I love going on walks. I would recommend going with the X-Large - the prongs are bigger in diameter so they are less likely to scratch a dog’s skin. When I first got my prong collar Dad thought it didn’t work very well, but then he removed 1 of the collar links so it fit snugly. He had my attention the first time I pulled for another dog. Also the higher on my neck that Dad keeps the prong collar, the more I have to behave.

Conclusion: Dad definitely recommends this Prong Collar! He wishes that he would have gotten it sooner. It really helped me learn my leash manners. 3.5 out of 4 Paws because Dad does not like the clip that opens/closes the collar.
